NCA Suspends 9 Radio Stations Including Wontumi FM

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has suspended the operations of nine radio stations across Ghana for various regulatory infractions. The suspensions, announced in a statement today, follow the expiration of a 30-day grace period granted by President John Dramani Mahama for stations to rectify their violations.

The grace period was intended to give defaulting stations an opportunity to comply with the laws and regulations governing FM radio broadcasting. However, the NCA’s statement revealed that six stations completely failed to take any action to remedy their breaches. These stations have had their operations suspended indefinitely.

The six stations are:

  • Donplus Multimedia Limited
  • Dreams Ghana Media Limited
  • Jam Multimedia Limited
  • Jewel Group Limited
  • Kpandai Star Community Radio
  • Unique Gateway Communication Limited

Additionally, three other stations were suspended for failing to fully remedy their breaches, even after taking some steps during the amnesty period. According to the NCA, these stations were found to be using unauthorized Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and unapproved transmitter locations. They were also operating without a valid Certificate of Compliance, a violation of Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011, L.I. 1991.

The three suspended stations, all under the ownership of Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited, are:

  • Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited in Accra
  • Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited on 101.3 FM in Kumasi
  • Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited on 101.3 FM in Takoradi

The NCA concluded its statement by reaffirming its commitment to closely monitor the broadcasting landscape and ensure all stations comply with relevant authorization conditions and broadcasting laws in Ghana.
