Adwoa Safo Must Respect Our Late Mother – Gertrude Quashigah’s Family

Former Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) National Coordinator Madam Gertrude Essie Quashigah’s family has strongly condemned recent claims made by former Gender Minister Sarah Adwoa Safo that she mismanaged the program.

The family, represented by Isaac Aidoo, Esq., issued a press release expressing their profound regret and displeasure over Safo’s comments, describing them as “unfounded and unfortunate.” According to the statement, “Our mother, who was the GSFP’s National Coordinator from 2019 until her tragic death in 2023, performed her duties with the utmost integrity, commitment, and selflessness.”

The family maintains that under Madam Quashigah’s leadership, the program saw significant expansion, positively impacting the nutrition and welfare of thousands of Ghanaian schoolchildren. They expressed sorrow that the allegations were being made against someone who is no longer alive to defend herself and stated that the remarks had caused distress to her children and those who respected her contributions to national development.

The family has called on Adwoa Safo to immediately retract her comments and issue an unqualified apology, urging her to “refrain from further casting aspersions on the legacy of our late mother.” They also highlighted the historical ties between their late father, Major Courage Quashigah (Rtd), and Adwoa Safo’s father, Apostle Kwadwo Safo, expressing disappointment that such claims would originate from someone with whom they share this connection. The statement called on Ghanaians to honor Madam Gertrude Quashigah’s memory, underscoring her lifelong commitment to the welfare of Ghanaian children and national service.

Background on Adwoa Safo’s Allegations

Sarah Adwoa Safo, former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, recently alleged widespread corruption and mismanagement within the School Feeding Programme. In an interview, she claimed that former President Akufo-Addo initially requested an audit after her appointment but later distanced himself from it after significant irregularities were uncovered.

Safo claimed a former coordinator (Madam Quashigah) refused to cooperate with the audit process despite multiple invitations and that the same coordinator later proposed adding “ghost schools” to the program for personal gain, which Safo refused. She also said a completed audit report was shelved after public criticism.
