US Embassy Warns Citizens In Abuja To Avoid Military & Gov’t Facilities

The United States’ Mission (US Embassy) in Nigeria  has issued a warning for all Americans to avoid military and government facilities in the capital city, Abuja. In an advisory posted on its website on Sunday, the mission emphasized the importance of this security alert in light of recent global developments. As part of the advisory, embassy staff members have been prohibited from making unofficial visits to any government or military sites in Abuja.

The mission stated, “Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, U.S. Mission Nigeria informs U.S. citizens that all U.S. Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to a Nigerian military site or other government venue in Abuja at this time.” Americans in Nigeria are advised to remain vigilant in public spaces, particularly in locations frequented by Westerners, expatriates, and government officials. The mission encourages U.S. nationals to avoid large gatherings, limit unnecessary travel, steer clear of predictable routines, familiarize themselves with emergency exits in buildings, and review their personal security plans.

Despite these warnings, the Consular Sections of Embassy Abuja and Consulate General Lagos remain open to assist citizens. In a broader context, the U.S. State Department has issued a “worldwide caution” for Americans, citing increased security risks due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. The alert highlights potential disruptions to travel and demonstrations against U.S. citizens and interests abroad as a result of the conflict between Israel and Iran.

The statement did not address the recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, which Tehran condemned as actions that would lead to “irreparable consequences.” In response, Iran has threatened U.S. bases in the Middle East and warned that American forces could face retaliation. Additionally, the United States has initiated evacuation flights for American citizens and permanent residents from Israel and ordered staff at its diplomatic missions in Iraq and Lebanon to depart those countries amid rising tensions.
