University of Ghana Suspends Lecturer & 16 Students for Various Offenses

17 people including 16 students and one lecturer, have been suspended for two academic semesters by the University of Ghana (UG) in Legon for a variety of offenses.

A university employee named Dr. Sampson Obed Appiah was among those punished for sexually harassing a member of the academic community.

Section 45(1)(g) of the University of Ghana’s Statutes states that Dr. Appiah has been suspended for two semesters, according to the university administration.

In addition to the suspension, Dr. Appiah must fulfill the following requirements:
1. Sign a written commitment to maintain good behavior and avoid similar actions in the future.
2. Participate in a counseling program.
3. Provide a formal written apology to the complainant.
4. Serve a two-semester suspension, which includes the second semester of the 2024/2025 academic year and the first semester of the 2025/2026 academic year.
5. Refrain from applying for promotion for one year following the suspension
6. Complete training on sexual harassment and misconduct, to be facilitated by the university’s Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee.
These measures were detailed in an official statement issued by the Registrar of the University of Ghana, Emelia Agyei-Mensah.

Furthermore, a total of 16 students have been sanctioned for offenses including plagiarism, falsification of documents, inter-hall conflicts, and drug possession.

Some of the affected students include:

1. Wahid Mohammed: Suspended for one academic year for possessing narcotics, violating Regulation 7.11(f)(1) of the University of Ghana Regulations for Junior Members (2017).
2. Boison Norbert: Also suspended for one academic year for possessing narcotics. He is additionally required to sign a written undertaking to be of good behavior and undergo counseling.
3. Owusu Afrifa, Obeng Takyi Stephen, and Nicholas Armah: Penalized for various offenses, among other unnamed students.
