Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo Sets New World Record For Half-Marathon

Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda has made history by being the first person to finish the half-marathon in less than 57 minutes. In Barcelona on Sunday, the 24-year-old Ugandan set an incredible new world record time of 56 minutes, 42 seconds.

At the World Athletics Gold Label road race, Kiplimo, a two-time world cross-country champion and previous half-marathon record holder (2021–2024), triumphantly recaptured the championship. Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia established the previous mark of 57:30 in Valencia in October, but he destroyed it by an astounding 48 seconds. In terms of the men’s global half-marathon record, this is the biggest single improvement ever noted.

Operating in perfect conditions, with no wind and a temperature of 13 degrees Celsius (55 degrees Fahrenheit), Kiplimo also set a world best of 39:47 for 15km (9.3 miles) en route to his record-breaking half-marathon time.

“I am very excited about what I did today,” said Kiplimo, who made his Olympic debut in the 5,000m race in Rio de Janeiro at the young age of 15. “I started strong, I wanted to have a great race, but I didn’t expect to break the world record. As the kilometres passed and I saw that I was going at record pace, I told myself that I had to maintain that pace no matter what it took.”
