Trump Sending Personal Invitations To Global Leaders For Inauguration

Donald Trump is personally extending invitations to numerous foreign leaders for his upcoming inauguration, aiming to create a major international event. This outreach includes heads of state who have previously clashed with the United States.

Trump’s transition team confirmed that he has invited Chinese President Xi Jinping, a highly unusual move given the significant geopolitical rivalry between the US and China. According to Trump spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, this is an instance of President Trump fostering an open communication with leaders of nations that are not only our allies but also our rivals and competitors. A top Chinese delegation is anticipated to attend in Xi’s place, according to reports.

Other invitees confirmed by sources include El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Argentinean President Javier Milei. All three are considered close Trump allies, yet their strongman tactics and far-right political leanings have at times caused concern for the US and its allies.

The invitations have been extended informally, often during phone conversations about other matters, or through back channels rather than direct leader-to-leader communication. Some invitations were also conveyed through written correspondence sent by Trump’s team. While Trump suggested additional “risky” invitations, his transition team did not respond to inquiries about the full guest list.

A Trump Advisor Described Trump’s Ambition

“Trump is very eager to have world leaders at the inauguration. He wants a global stage,” and advisor to Trump said. The informal nature of the invitations has complicated tracking efforts for Trump’s aides, creating significant logistical and security challenges for the Secret Service and Capitol Police, who are already tasked with protecting the incoming president, members of Congress, the Supreme Court, and potentially other past presidents.

Although President Xi Jinping’s attendance is not expected, the acceptance of invitations remains unclear for several leaders. Bukele’s office confirmed receiving an invitation, but his attendance is unconfirmed. Despite ongoing trade tensions, Trump stated that he and Xi have maintained regular communication since his election, describing their relationship as “very good”. Trump asserted that all invitees had accepted, but declined to offer specifics.
