Sign Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill Before You Leave – PCG Moderator To Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been directly urged by Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, to sign the anti-gay bill (or anti-LGBTQ+ bill) into law before the conclusion of his tenure. During the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s (PCG) bicentennial celebration on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at the Osu Castle, Dr. Kwakye stressed the importance of the bill and asked the President to approve it in order to secure his legacy.

“We Presbyterians, who backed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill under my predecessor’s leadership, considered it as this year’s birthday gift,” Dr. Kwakye stated. “Please, Your Excellency, complete our happiness. We have faith that in the final days, you will do just that by signing the bill into law in Ghana. Our goal is to use the gospel to uphold the African people’s ideals. And we are sure you will, Sir,” he continued.

These remarks come after the Supreme Court unanimously dismissed two petitions challenging the constitutionality of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, widely known as the anti-gay bill. On December 18, the Court rejected challenges filed by broadcast journalist and lawyer Richard Dela Sky and Amanda Odoi.

The bill, passed by Parliament on February 28, 2024, has sparked national debate, with supporters arguing it protects traditional family values and opponents claiming it infringes upon human rights. Even with the Court’s dismissal of the petitions, the bill’s future remains unclear, as President Akufo-Addo had previously indicated that he was waiting for all pending legal issues to be resolved before making a decision.
