Savannah Regional EC Calls For RIPAC Meeting Over Election Violence

The Savannah Regional Electoral Commission (EC) has announced a crucial Regional Inter-Party Advisory Committee (RIPAC) meeting. This meeting will be held to address the aftermath of the recent violence in the Damongo Constituency and determine the way forward regarding the delayed election results. Key stakeholders will participate, receiving updates on the EC’s official position in light of the tragic events.

Violence erupted in the Damongo Constituency following delays in the declaration of the election results. The resulting protests culminated in the tragic death of one person and the complete destruction of the EC’s local office. Frustrated youth stormed the Damongo Municipal Collation Centre, setting the EC office ablaze. The fire caused extensive damage to the building and all its contents.

In the midst of the chaos, an NDC supporter, Sibannira Mukaila, was reportedly shot. Despite being rushed to St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving.

The Ghana Police Service has taken swift action, arresting twelve individuals suspected of involvement in the violence, including those responsible for the arson attack on the EC office.

The National Peace Council and the West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP) have issued strong condemnations of the incident, urging all residents to remain calm and exercise restraint. Eyewitnesses consistently report that the unrest stemmed from public agitation over the unacceptable delays in announcing the election results. The youth’s response quickly escalated, leading to the significant property destruction and the heartbreaking loss of life.

While investigations continue, authorities are appealing for peace to prevent further escalation. The EC’s upcoming RIPAC meeting aims to establish a clear path forward and restore order to the Damongo Constituency.
