Popular Asante Kotoko Fan ‘Pooley’ Stabbed To Death

According to reports, Francis Frimpong, also known as Pooley, a well-known Asante Kotoko supporter, was killed in a football match at Nana Konamansah II Park in Nsoatre, a neighborhood in the Bono Ahafo region.

The reports indicate that Pooley was fatally stabbed on Sunday, February 2, 2025, during a matchday 19 match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko.

The tragic incident, described as another low moment for Ghanaian football, is the culmination of a series of violent events that marred the game.

Eyewitness accounts reveal that Frimpong, a lifelong and vocal Asante Kotoko supporter, was stabbed multiple times (reportedly five) by an unidentified individual in the aftermath of Asante Kotoko’s 1-0 defeat to Nsoatreman.

BigFamily News followed the incidence and highlighted a number of major incidents that occurred during the game:

Pre-Match Clashes:

The day was fraught with tension, beginning with clashes between fans from both clubs even before the match started. Kumasi Asante Kotoko’s team bus faced difficulties entering the stadium due to the unrest.

Player Altercations:

The on-field action was no less chaotic, with players from both teams engaging in physical confrontations. A video shared by a fan shows Kotoko goalkeeper Mohammed Camara punching two Nsoatreman players on the sidelines. Kotoko captain Justice Blay also joined the fracas, brawling with several Nsoatreman players while home fans threw objects at the visiting team. Both Blay and Camara were subsequently sent off, leaving Kotoko with just eight players by the end of the game, due to an earlier red card.

Fans Blast Police & Ambulance Driver

The aftermath of the stabbing has seen strong criticism leveled at the police and ambulance services present at the venue. Eyewitnesses claim that a police officer appeared indifferent as the victim bled, while the ambulance was reportedly delayed. These issues have led to calls for football authorities to hold these personnel accountable for apparent negligence.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko issued a statement, mourning their departed fan and condemning the violence, confirming that their media personnel and fans who traveled from Kumasi were also attacked after the game.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has taken decisive action by banning the Nana Koromansah II Park, home venue of Nsoatreman F.C., citing the need for safety and initiating an investigation into the incident. They have tasked DCOP Lydia Donkor and FA prosecutors to conduct a full probe.
