Parliament Summons Interior Minister Over Raid on Former BoG Governor’s Residence

Parliament has summoned Interior Minister Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka to discuss the recent search of Dr. Ernest Addison’s residence, which was allegedly carried out by National Security operatives, on March 19, 2025.

The home of Dr. Ernest Addison, the former governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), was raided on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. It is reported that the operation was conducted by national security personnel led by Richard Jakpa. Following the raid, sources from the former governor’s office indicated that several systems in his home were tampered with and that a significant amount of money and jewelry was taken. However, National Security has denied these allegations, asserting that “no items were stolen” and that details of the items collected during the raid will be released after a thorough investigation. They also noted the discovery of empty money boxes at the former governor’s residence.

Parliament Parliament Raid

George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, the Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament, announced this development last Friday while presenting the Business Statement for the upcoming week.

As arranged by the Business Committee, the Interior Minister, on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, will provide an update to the House regarding the events surrounding the raid on Dr. Ernest Addison’s home.

He further urged all Honourable Members to take note and make themselves available for the briefing on that date, as emphasized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South.

The search involved armed men, alleged to be security operatives, who reportedly stormed Dr Addison’s residence at Roman Ridge in the early hours of Wednesday morning, purportedly seeking cash in a hidden vault.

The Controversy and Reactions:

The incident has sparked considerable controversy and differing accounts:

• Minority Press Conference: Following the incident, the Minority in Parliament held a press conference at the Parliament House last Thursday to condemn what they termed a pattern of unlawful raids targeting appointees of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, addressing the press, recalled a similar raid on the home of former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, allegedly led by Richard Jakpa, described as “a known NDC activist, who describes himself as Director of Operations at the National Security.” Afenyo-Markin argued that these raids were conducted in a manner that violated the rights of the individuals involved, stating: “This Rambo-style approach must cease.”

• Government Response and Justification: Since the incident, government officials, including the Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, have asserted that the search was conducted legally at the private residence of the former Governor of the BoG as part of ongoing investigations into the alleged misappropriation of state assets.

Dr. Srem-Sai stated that the operation, which took place last Wednesday, was carried out under the authority of a valid warrant. “We take full responsibility for these searches, and I can confirm they were conducted in accordance with legal procedures,” he said.
