Osafo Maafo’s Son & 3 Other SSNIT Directors Sacked

Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo’s position as Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has been formally terminated by the government.

In a recent presidential directive, President John Mahama also terminated the contracts of three deputy directors-general at SSNIT, according to media reports. Deputy Director-General for Finance and Administration Kwame Adu-Darkwa, Deputy Director-General for Operations and Benefits Juliana Kpedekpo, and Deputy Director-General for Investment and Development Nana Serwah Bonsu Amoako are the deputies impacted by this decision.

Less than a year has passed since former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo appointed Osafo-Maafo to the post at SSNIT in April 2024.

A letter dated February 10, 2025, from the presidency to all heads of government institutions indicated that the Chief of Staff had instructed the annulment of all appointments and recruitments made after December 7, 2024.

“Consistent with government procurement in relation to near end of tenure appointments and recruitments, I wish to bring to your attention that all appointments and recruitments made in the Public Services of Ghana after 7th December, 2024, are not in compliance with established good governance practices and principles,” the letter stated.

“Accordingly, all Head of Government Institutions are hereby requested to take the necessary steps to annul any such appointments or recruitments and submit a comprehensive report on the actions taken to this Office by 1th February, 2025,” it continued.

President Requests Payroll Of Public Staff

This follows a previous directive issued on January 15, 2025, from the Office of the President, requesting all heads of government institutions to submit detailed records of all staff members added to their payrolls since December 7, 2024.

The January 15th request, signed by Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff, specified the information required for each new employee, including their full names, designations/job titles, employee identification numbers (if applicable), date of appointments, and the date they were added to the payroll. Furthermore, the directive emphasized the importance of this exercise in maintaining accountability in the management of public funds. Heads of institutions were required to submit the requested data to the Office of the President by January 31, 2025.

β€œIn line with ongoing efforts to ensure the accuracy and integrity of government payroll records under the John Mahama administration, I am writing to request your assistance in providing information on staff who have been added to your Institution’s Payroll since Saturday 7th December 2024,” the January 15th statement stated.

Finally, the statement added, “This information is critical to maintaining transparency and accountability in our payroll, management processes. Kindly ensure that the requested data is submitted to my office no later than Friday 31st January 2025. Should you require further clarification or have any questions regarding this directive, please do not hesitate to contact us. Your cooperation in this important matter is highly appreciated.”
