NPP Calls On IGP To Beef Up Security At Collation Centers

The Inspector General of Police and the Ghana Police Service have been strongly urged by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to strengthen security and uphold law and order at collation centers around the country. Rising tensions and reports of disturbance at several sites during the ongoing election process have prompted this demand.

NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua emphasized the need of maintaining peace and order during a press conference in Accra on Sunday in order to facilitate an easy and transparent process for compiling election results. In order to avoid any disruptions that would jeopardize the integrity of the electoral process, he explicitly called for the deployment of enough police officers to important collation centers and a major increase in patrols.

Mr. Kodua also appealed for calm and adherence to the rule of law from all political parties and their supporters, emphasizing the importance of cooperation with security agencies to guarantee a peaceful and orderly collation.

Addressing specific incidents, he stated: “The NPP has observed with grave concern the violent conduct of NDC thugs at several constituency collation centers, including Damongo, Ablekuma North, Techiman South, Aowin, Obuasi East, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Fanteakwa North, Ahafo Ano North, Ahafo Ano South West, Akwatia, Trobu, and Tema Central. Data indicating our flagbearer’s concession this morning clearly shows NPP victories in these constituencies. However, the NDC, unwilling to accept defeat, is attempting to pressure the EC to manipulate the results.”

He continued, vehemently condemning these attacks and issuing a warning: “We will resist any attempt to tamper with the parliamentary election results in these constituencies. I call on the IGP…Mr. IGP, we believe you are aware of the situation at various collation centers, and as the NPP, we urge you to maintain law and order. We must protect the rights and safety of all citizens and prevent illegal looting and intimidation. I call on the NDC leadership to call their supporters to order and condemn these acts of violence.”
