Mortuary Workers Association To Strike Again Over Failed Negotiations
Starting on Thursday, November 28, 2024, the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has declared a statewide strike. According to the association, negotiations to settle long-standing grievances broke down, leading to this conclusion.
In the “Notification of Intention to Resume Strike Action in Abeyance” statement, MOWAG specifically charged that pertinent parties were not sufficiently committed to resolving their issues. This next round of strikes follows one that was temporarily halted on September 26, 2024, to allow for negotiations. In order to safeguard the interests of their members, MOWAG has no choice but to go ahead with the strike, as the fundamental problems have not been addressed despite their best attempts to find a solution.
The strike, effective November 28th, will involve a complete cessation of operations in all public and private mortuary facilities across Ghana. This is expected to cause significant disruption to mortuary services nationwide, impacting funeral arrangements and causing distress to bereaved families. MOWAG’s repeated calls for improved working conditions, increased salaries, and better resources to ensure safe and efficient operations have apparently been ignored. The association argues that these shortcomings negatively affect both the well-being of its members and the quality of mortuary services provided in Ghana.
Despite the announcement of the strike, MOWAG leadership has expressed a continued willingness to engage in dialogue. They urge relevant authorities to take immediate action to resolve the impasse before the strike begins. The statement concludes with a hopeful appeal for a resolution through open and productive discussions, even at this late stage.
