McDan Group and GPHA Partner to Boost Ghana’s Marine Sector
In an important collaboration, the McDan Group and the Ghana Port and Harbours Authority (GPHA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen Ghana’s maritime logistics and transportation capacities. An important step in bolstering the country’s maritime infrastructure was taken with the signing ceremony, which took place in Tema.
The partnership aims to leverage the expertise of both organizations to drive growth within Ghana’s marine sector. GPHA, established in 1986, plays a crucial role in planning, developing, and regulating the country’s ports. McDan Group, a prominent indigenous conglomerate, boasts a diverse portfolio spanning shipping, freight forwarding, customs clearance, cargo and port handling, transportation, real estate, construction, agriculture, and salt mining.
This collaboration centers around McDan’s ambitious project to develop the “Electrochem Terminal, Port of Ada.” McDan recently acquired a 30-year renewable lease for the Ghana Highway Authority’s ferry maintenance and operations terminal site in Ada, paving the way for this strategic development.
The project will focus on streamlining the management and export of bulk natural and processed salt, addressing the rising global and regional demand for this commodity. The ElectroChem Terminal will be equipped with essential facilities for salt handling and processing, facilitating efficient export to international markets.
Benefits for Ghana:
- Enhanced Cargo Management: Improvements in cargo services management will enhance efficiency and reduce operational costs.
- Economic Boost: The project is expected to generate significant economic activity, particularly within the salt business cluster.
- Reduced Import Dependency: The new terminal will decrease Ghana’s reliance on salt imports and bolster its export capabilities.
- Job Creation: The project is expected to create numerous job opportunities, contributing to local economic growth.
- Community Development: McDan Group aims to construct a state-of-the-art facility with warehouses, maintenance docks, and residential amenities, contributing to the overall development of the Ada community.
The MoU establishes a joint project development team to oversee technical meetings, stakeholder engagement, and the implementation of service agreements. Both parties are committed to working collaboratively to ensure the project’s success, aiming for future agreements to further enhance their partnership.
