Mahama Given 3 Months To Revoke All Mining Licenses Issued By Akufo-Addo

Leading Democracy Hub member Oliver Barker-Vormawor has given President John Dramani Mahama three months to cancel the more than 2,000 mining permits that the previous administration under President Akufo-Addo had granted.

The pressure group’s head, Barker-Vormawor, stated in a string of social media posts that if the President does not act on this issue, his group will stage a demonstration on March 6. “The President is rescinding prior appointments,” he wrote. That’s all good. Why doesn’t he also revoke the 2000 mining permits that Mampam granted his friends? Under the guise of subpar licensing, we cannot permit people to do exactly what they did unlawfully. The President has a 3-month ultimatum exactly! 6th March Demonstration Loading.”

His call for action comes after an environmental report by journalist Erastus Asare Donkor on January 26, 2025, revealed that some miners, sanctioned by elements of the new government, are still actively degrading the Tano Anwia forest reserve with their activities.

In a subsequent post, Barker-Vormawor stated that as part of immediate measures to tackle illegal mining, the president must revoke all licenses issued under the previous government and place a moratorium on the issuance of any new licenses.

He stated, “The disaster of Nana Addo’s regime, the worst this country has ever seen, managed to issue over 2000 mining licenses to cronies in 4 years, including 103 after they lost the election. Creating an ecological clusterfuck for this generation and the next. And we sit down and watch? Just saying ‘oh wow’ and moving on is not the appropriate response of a people at risk of having to import drinking water soon. The President must revoke all those licenses and put a moratorium on new licenses. If we can burn excavators, we can revoke licenses. Time for a major RESET in our relationship with the environment.”

Moreover, Journalist and legal practitioner Samson Lardy Ayenini has also publicly supported the call for action, highlighting the devastating effects of galamsey. He wrote on his Facebook page, “Galamsey devastation. Urgent action, not a committee, required.”
