Lightning Strike Kills 14 People at Refugee Camp in Uganda

A tragic lightning strike at a refugee camp in Uganda has claimed the lives of 13 children and one adult, according to police.

The victims were attending a church service on Saturday evening when the lightning struck, killing a 21-year-old adult and 13 children, while injuring 34 others.

The incident occurred at Palabek Refugee Settlement in north-western Uganda, an area that has recently experienced heavy rains with thunder and lightning. However, the exact ages of the children who died have not been released.

Palabek Refugee Settlement provides shelter to over 80,000 refugees and asylum seekers, primarily from neighboring South Sudan, according to the UN Refugee Agency.

This is not the first such tragedy in the region. In 2019, lightning killed 10 children in the city of Arua, also in north-western Uganda, while they were taking a break from a football game.
