IGP Launches Investigations Into Election-Related Deaths

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has reacted to President John Dramani Mahama’s order to look into deaths connected to the 2020 and 2024 elections. At the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, the IGP has formed a dedicated investigative team and given them deadlines to finish their work and turn in a report. Chief Superintendent Joseph Nanegbe serves as the team’s chair and is made up of extremely knowledgeable and accomplished Ghana Police Service officers.

According to the report, the IGP assured the President that all necessary resources will be made available to ensure the team achieves its objectives. The investigative team will build upon the work already done by the IGP and his team since he assumed office in 2021. Upon assuming office, Dr. Akuffo Dampare established the Cold Case Unit at the CID headquarters to ensure continued investigation into unresolved crime-related matters. The report notes that the Cold Case Unit, which has been handling the 2020 election-related death cases, has already made significant progress, with some suspects currently facing prosecution.

President John Mahama, in a letter dated January 10, 2025, directed the Inspector-General of Police to conduct investigations into the deaths that occurred during the 2020 and 2024 elections.
