Reports indicate that Ghana’s Youth and Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, faces an uncertain future, despite his recent re-election as a Member of Parliament. Calls for his dismissal are increasing, coming from segments of the public and sports analysts. Concurrently, former Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has publicly stated his desire to return to the position should President-elect John Dramani Mahama offer it to him within the incoming administration.
In an interview with Joy Sports, Mr. Vanderpuye expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of Ghanaian sports under the NPP government. He expressed confidence in his ability to bring about meaningful reforms if appointed Sports Minister in 2025. Mr. Vanderpuye stated that he is unhappy with the current state of affairs within the sports ministry.
He believes numerous issues within the sector demand a thorough cleansing to ensure that individual footballers and the nation as a whole benefit. He asserted that until these problems are addressed, the football sector will continue to be exploited by businessmen and moneylenders for their personal gain, hindering its growth. He emphasized the need for those who play the game, invest in it financially, and dedicate their time to it to experience the rewards of their efforts.
Finally, Nii Lante Vanderpuye pledged, drawing on his past experience as a footballer and sportsman, to actively combat anyone seeking to exploit athletes.
These were his words on the interview
“If i become the Minister of Sports in 2025, i will sanitize the the Sports. I will sanitize the sports once again.
I am not happy with the things going on, i am not happy.
There are a lot of things going on, there are so many things in our football going on that unless we put bold steps to sanitize the system and and take decisions that will ennure to the benefit of those who are doing football and the footballers and not business men and shylocks, football will not grow.
The people who play the game, the people who invest their money, people who invest their time should enjoy football and not people who sit behind and turn footballers and people who do football like poultry chicken and anytime they decide to have then they pick them up for stew and soup and enjoy themselves, no that will not happen.
I have been a footballer before, i have been a sportsman before and i will fight against anyone who desire to exploit any sports man.”
