Hon. Assafuah To Sue Gov’t Over “Unjust Dismissals”

Honorable Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Member of Parliament for the Old Tafo Constituency in the Ashanti Region, has publicly condemned the recent termination of appointments of heads of various state institutions by the ruling government, labeling the dismissals as “unjust.”

In a post on Hon. Assafuah’s official timeline on X (formerly Twitter), the MP shared a letter directed to the office of parliament, titled “WE ARE GOING TO COURT. SAY NO TO UNJUST DISMISSALS!”.

In the letter, Hon. Assafuah accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of prioritizing political appointments over effective governance. Criticizing the justification for the dismissals, he stated that “it is deeply unfortunate and unacceptable that young people, duly recruited by a properly constituted Ghanaian government, are now being dismissed without just cause.”

Assafuah noted that while the Mahama government had promised to implement a 24-hour economy plan to create jobs and expand economic opportunities, its actions since assuming power contradict these promises. He argued that instead of delivering on its pledges to the youth of Ghana, the government seems more focused on “political appointment drama and endless committee formations than in actual governance.”

The MP labeled the government’s actions as “political victimization” and vowed to fight against what he sees as an abuse of power.

“We are taking this battle to court to ensure that this already failing government does not have unchecked power to unjustly terminate hardworking young employees,” he asserted.

“If this government is serious about job creation, it should be expanding opportunities, not displacing workers. Sacking people and replacing them does nothing to reduce unemployment-it only deepens economic hardship,” he added.

Hon. Assafuah’s comments follow reports that President John Dramani Mahama has terminated the appointments of four Director-Generals of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), including the main Director-General, Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo (son of former senior presidential advisor Yaw Osafo Maafo), Deputy Director-General for Finance and Administration Kwame Adu-Darkwa, Deputy Director-General for Operations and Benefits Juliana Kpedekpo, and Deputy Director-General for Investment and Development Nana Serwah Bonsu Amoako.

Prior to these dismissals, the Office of the President, in January 2025, had requested all heads of government institutions to submit detailed records of all staff members added to their payrolls since December 7, 2024. The January 15th request, signed by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, specified the information required for each new employee, including their full names, designations/job titles, employee identification numbers (if applicable), date of appointments, and the date they were added to the payroll. The directive emphasized the importance of this exercise in maintaining accountability in the management of public funds.
