Gov’t Donates GH¢1 Million to Kantamanto Market Fire Victims

GH¢1 million has been provided by the government to aid those affected by the tragic fire that destroyed Accra’s Kantamanto Market on January 2, 2025. President John Dramani Mahama promised this donation during a meeting with the Kantamanto Traders Association on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
In addition to presenting the donation on behalf of the President, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah conveyed the government’s condolences for the traders who sustained severe losses. In order to avert such tragedies, he also emphasized the necessity of having talks about revamping the market and revealed plans to turn Kantamanto into a contemporary, multifunctional building.
“There is hope,” Debrah said, emphsizing the government’s dedication to seeking answers. The president is prepared to assist without regard to politics because he was elected to address issues.

The GH¢1 million donation will be distributed among various associations within the Kantamanto Traders Association, including groups representing used clothes traders, egg sellers, hairdressers, platform traders, railway sellers, youth clothes sellers, and shoe sellers. These groups represent diverse traders and business owners who bore the brunt of the fire, which destroyed over 7,000 shops and displaced countless livelihoods.
