Fire From Burst Gas Pipe In Malaysia Injures Over 100

A fire triggered by a ruptured gas pipeline sent a massive fireball erupting into the sky near Malaysia’s largest city on Tuesday, impacting numerous homes and leaving over 100 people injured.
Visible from miles away, the tall fire that started close to a gas station in the Kuala Lumpur neighborhood of Putra Heights blazed for several hours. As Malaysia’s mainly Muslim population was celebrating the second day of Eid, the tragedy happened on the public holiday.
National oil company Petronas stated that the fire began at one of its gas pipelines at 8:10 a.m., adding that the affected section of the pipeline was subsequently isolated. Disaster management officials indicated that shutting down the pipeline valves was the primary strategy to extinguish the fire.
The Selangor state fire department reported to the Star newspaper that firefighters were able to approach the flames, which at one point reached 20 stories in height, around 2:45 p.m.
At least 49 houses were damaged in the incident, and 112 people sustained injuries. Selangor Deputy Police Chief Mohamad Zaini Abu Hassan, as quoted by the national Bernama news agency, stated that 63 people were hospitalized for burns, breathing difficulties, and other injuries.

Selangor Chief Minister Amirudin Shari said that the fire department conducted evacuations of nearby homes as a safety precaution, and that displaced residents would be housed in nearby mosques until the situation is brought under control.

Victims Of Injury
Lee Weng Ken, who suffered burns to his left leg, said he was shocked when the ceiling of his house collapsed, damaging his vehicle parked on the property.
“I rushed out of my house but fell and suffered burns due to the heat from the blaze near my house,” he recounted to Bernama.
Another victim, identified only as Andy, told Bernama that he fled his home with his children after feeling tremors and seeing the intense fire approximately 100 meters (328 feet) away.
“I could only take the car out. My 18-year-old daughter injured her foot when she fell while climbing the fence due to the heat,” he stated.
Petronas reported that three gas stations were closed as a precautionary measure, although they were not directly affected by the fire. Investigations into the cause of the pipeline rupture are currently underway.
