Fatal Shootings Plague Migrant Camp in Northern France, 1 Dead and 2 Injured
A migrant camp in northern France has been the scene of two deadly shootings over the weekend, leaving two people dead and several others wounded. These incidents highlight the dangerous realities faced by migrants attempting to cross the English Channel.
On Sunday, one person was killed and two seriously wounded in a shooting near the Loon-Plage camp, just outside Dunkirk. This followed a separate incident on Saturday in the same area, where a 24-year-old Sudanese man was killed and five others injured. All victims in Saturday’s shooting were Sudanese nationals, and one of the injured was a child.

Authorities have arrested two suspects in connection with Saturday’s violence: a 29-year-old who claims to be from Iraq and a 16-year-old who says he is from Afghanistan. An investigation has been launched into murder and attempted murder by an organized gang.
These shootings occurred in a region where many migrants gather, hoping to make the perilous sea crossing to Britain. Both France and Britain have pledged to crack down on people-smugglers who charge exorbitant fees for passage on often overcrowded and unseaworthy boats.
The dangers of these crossings are significant. On Friday alone, 919 people arrived on British shores after crossing the Channel in 14 small boats. French authorities report that at least 15 migrants have died at sea trying to reach England since the beginning of this year. Last year, over 36,800 people crossed the Channel, a 25% increase from 2023. In 2024, a record 78 migrants died attempting the crossing, according to French authorities.
