Dzifa Gomashie Calls For Review of District Assemblies’ Acts To Boost Tourism

Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Member of Parliament for Ketu-South and nominee for Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, has called for a review of the District Assemblies’ Acts, emphasizing that such changes could significantly benefit young, talented individuals within the tourism sector.

Gomashie emphasized the District Assemblies’ capacity to grow tourism in their local areas during her screening by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. “We should review the District Assemblies Acts,” she said. The district assemblies have the chance to create tourism tailored to their local communities, and I would be delighted to collaborate with them in order to explore the idea of having national cultural centers spread around the nation.” She added that she wanted to work with others on this, giving young, imaginative people opportunity. According to Gomashie, this strategy may provide young people with immediate, beneficial outcomes.

The District Assemblies Acts she referred to include the Assemblies Common Fund Act, 1993 (Act 455), the Local Government Act, 1993 (Act 462), and the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).

Gomashie’s appearance before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee today, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, is part of the vetting process to confirm her appointment as the substantive minister. This is the committee’s fourth sitting as they expedite the vetting process to enable President John Dramani Mahama to form his government. Gomashie was nominated for the ministerial position on January 16, 2025.

Ablah Dzifa Gomashie is a distinguished Ghanaian actress, producer, screenwriter, and politician. She served as the Deputy Minister of Tourism under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from 2013 to 2017 during President John Dramani Mahama’s administration. Currently, she is the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for the Ketu South Constituency and holds the title of queen-mother in the Aflao Traditional Area.

Gomashie pursued her education at the University of Ghana, earning a diploma in Theatre Arts, a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Management, and an MPhil in African Studies from the Institute of African Studies.

In 2013, she was appointed by President Mahama as the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts Culture, a role she maintained until the NDC lost the elections in 2017 and transitioned power to the incoming government.

On August 24, 2019, Gomashie successfully contested for the NDC nomination to represent the Ketu South constituency in the 2020 elections, winning by a margin of 586 votes.

She is actively involved in various committees, including the Poverty Reduction Strategy Committee and the Trade, Industry and Tourism Committee.

In recognition of her contributions to Ghana’s entertainment industry, Gomashie was honored by the organizers of the 3Music Awards.
