Don’t Appoint Randy Abbey As Sports Minister – Ekow Asmah

Citing worries about suspected corruption inside the Ghana Football Association (GFA), veteran sports journalist Ekow Asmah openly advised President John Mahama against selecting Dr. Randy Abbey as the Minister for Sports and Recreation. As President Mahama looks to boost Ghana’s sports industry, Dr. Abbey has been floated as a possible contender for the position.

After he resigned as host of Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, speculation grew more intense. Asmah, however, encouraged the president to reevaluate Dr. Abbey’s possible appointment in an interview with Happy FM, claiming that he had a significant role in “crooked dealings” within the GFA.“Dr Randy Abbey should not be appointed as the new Minister for Sports and Recreation because he is deeply involved in all the crooked dealings surrounding the current administration of the GFA,” Asmah stated.

He further emphasized the need for a strong and principled leader who would challenge the GFA’s current administration and address its alleged misconduct. “We need a minister who will realign the ministry with President John Mahama’s vision of resetting the country,” Asmah explained. He also criticized the previous minister, Mustapha Ussif, for focusing primarily on football, and stressed the need for someone who would “crack down on the crooks at the FA.” Randy Abbey is a prominent Ghanaian media personality and sports administrator. He has been the host of Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana since 2002.

In 2006, he also served as the spokesperson for the Ghana Football Association for eight years. In 2014, he became the majority shareholder of Kpando Hearts of Lions Football Club. He was also elected as a member of the GFA Executive Committee in 2019. Furthermore, Abbey serves as the chairman of the Black Satellites management committee, the Referees Appointment Committee, and the Black Meteors Management Committee. He is also a member of the Ghana Journalists Association.

Abbey received the Order of the Volta in 2006 for his contribution to the growth and development of media in Ghana. That same year, he was awarded a Grand Medal for his role in Ghana’s qualification and performance at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.
