CETAG To Embark On Indefinite Strike From December 31
The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has declared an indefinite strike set to begin on December 31, 2024. This decision follows an emergency meeting of CETAG’s National Council held on Friday, December 20, 2024, where the union cited the government’s continued failure to honor critical agreements reached during previous negotiations.
A statement released on Monday, December 23, conveyed CETAG’s frustration with repeated breaches of agreements and roadmaps concerning the implementation of a compulsory arbitration award from the National Labour Commission (NLC) on May 2, 2023. The union accused the government of not upholding commitments made in good faith, which they believe has adversely affected members’ welfare and the overall education sector. CETAG had previously suspended a strike on August 20, 2024, after receiving assurances from government officials, including the Vice President and the Ministers for Employment, Labour Relations, and Pensions, and Education. These assurances led to an agreement signed on August 19, 2024.
However, CETAG now contends that the government has blatantly ignored the terms of this agreement, leaving them with no choice but to resume industrial action to press for their demands. The union called on stakeholders in teacher education, including the Ministry of Education, GTEC, affiliate universities, and the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG), to step in urgently to avoid disruptions to the academic calendar. CETAG emphasized that its leadership had exhausted all diplomatic avenues to resolve the issues and urged immediate action to prevent further complications.
