Blame NDC and Mahama for Obuasi Mining Deaths – NPP’s Richard Ahiaghba

Richard Ahiagbah, the National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has held former President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) responsible for the deaths of at least seven individuals in Obuasi on Saturday.

Ahiagbah referred to the tragic incident, which unfolded during a violent confrontation between illegal miners and military personnel guarding the AngloGold Ashanti mining site, as a “Black Sunday.”

In a heartfelt social media post expressing his sorrow and frustration, Ahiagbah accused the NDC of negligence and criticized the newly inaugurated Mahama administration for the tragedy. He asserted that the NDC’s failure to manage their supporters contributed to the violent clash that occurred.

“Members of the NDC have taken the law into their own hands, storming institutions under the false pretense that their government is in power. Ghanaians must hold the NDC and the John Mahama administration accountable for the deaths of these eight Ghanaians. In just 12 days of their administration, we have witnessed eight preventable tragedies because the NDC ignored calls to control their unruly members. Now, these precious lives are lost forever due to that negligence. No amount of investigation will bring them back,” Ahiagbah stated on X.

The clash took place on the night of January 18, 2025, resulting in the death of seven illegal miners and leaving several others injured. According to reports, the miners, armed with weapons, attempted to breach the mining site, prompting a defensive response from the military personnel on Operation HALT II duty.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) detailed the events leading up to the clash in a release, confirming the casualties and the context of the confrontation. The military’s statement indicated that the miners initiated the violence by firing at the patrol team, forcing the soldiers to respond defensively.

Following the incident, President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an immediate investigation into the matter, with the government expressing its regret over the loss of life.
