Chief Justice Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo has ordered the immediate closure of seven courts in the Upper East Region in an effort to protect judges, personnel, and court users. This move is a reaction to the growing violence in the region specifically Bawku, caused by chieftaincy disputes.
Courts Affected:
The following courts are closed until further notice:
- Bolgatanga High Court
- Circuit Court in Bolgatanga
- Bolgatanga District Court
- District Court Zuarungu
- District Court Zebilla
- Garu District Court
- Bongo District Court
Moreover,Since the battle recommenced in November 2021, Bawku’s Circuit and District courts have already been closed, forcing locals who require court services to turn to those in neighboring districts.
Background of Violence:
The closure follows a recent surge in violence, including a deadly gunfire attack on travelers along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway on October 27, 2024. The attack, which resulted in fatalities and the burning of two vehicles, has heightened fear in the region.
The latest clashes are attributed to the return of a rival chief to Bawku, leading to increased tensions and unrest. Unfortunately, the once vibrant town of Bawku has come to a standstill as residents fear for their safety.
In response to the heightened insecurity, the government imposed a 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. curfew on Bawku and surrounding communities on Monday, October 28, 2024.
The Judicial Secretary, Justice Pamela C.A. Koranteng, issued a memorandum on October 29, 2024, announcing the closure of the affected courts. The memo emphasizes the importance of ensuring the safety of all involved and calls on registrars to secure court assets.
“In order to ensure the safety of judges, staff, lawyers and court users, the Chief Justice has ordered the closure of the affected courts with immediate effect until further notice”, the memorandum stated.
The statement urged registrars to keep all assets of the courts safe and further entreated the staff to stay safe.
The closure has significantly impacted court users, who are unable to access legal services. Disappointed individuals who traveled to the courts yesterday were met with closed doors and forced to return home without receiving the services they needed.
