ANC Ex-Spokesperson, 6 Others Charged with Fraud in SA

Pule Mabe, the former spokesperson for the African National Congress (ANC), is facing fraud charges alongside six other individuals, including local government officials. The charges stem from a 27 million rand (£1.2m; $1.6m) government contract for waste management services awarded to Enviro-Mobi five years ago.

The Hawks, South Africa’s elite police unit, uncovered a connection between Enviro-Mobi and Mabe, who was serving as an MP at the time, despite the company not disclosing this link during the tender process. The investigation revealed that the Gauteng provincial government’s Department of Agriculture paid Enviro-Mobi 25 million rand for 200 vehicles that were never delivered.

Mabe, who was granted bail after appearing in court on Wednesday, denies the allegations and has stepped down from the ANC’s executive committee, emphasizing that his resignation is not an admission of guilt.

This is not the first time Mabe has faced accusations of corruption. In 2013, he was arrested for alleged fraud against the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) but was later cleared of all charges. Subsequently, in 2017, he was fined after a parliamentary committee found that he had benefitted from a contract with the state-owned rail company.

The latest charges against Mabe and his co-accused highlight the persistent challenge of tackling corruption within South African government contracts. The case is expected to continue in the coming months.
