Adwoa Safo Vrs NPP: All Bombshells Of Political Rot Dropped

Former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo is dominating headlines after granting a flurry of media interviews in recent days, unleashing what some are calling a torrent of explosive revelations about the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Videos of Safo sharing her side of the story are trending across social media, painting a picture of internal strife and alleged injustices. The MP, who previously held the dual roles of Member of Parliament for the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency and Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, has detailed what she describes as unfair treatment at the hands of the NPP during her final two years in Parliament. Here’s a compilation of key revelations from her recent media appearances:

I Was A Victim Of Character Assassination

In an interview with Asempa FM on March 18, 2025, Safo recounted being stripped of her position as Deputy Majority Leader and relegated to the backbench, a move she believes was intended to diminish her influence. She claimed that some party members deliberately sought to damage her reputation, requiring intervention from the party’s General Secretary and Majority Whip to reposition her in Parliament.

In a separate interview with JoyNews, Safo elaborated, describing herself as a victim of character assassination due to false narratives and intense criticism that severely impacted her reputation. She revealed that a deeply personal tragedy – the loss of a child while her elderly son battled a serious illness in the United States – coincided with the height of her political career.

Her travels abroad to care for her family, despite informing the necessary authorities, were misconstrued, leading to accusations of breaching parliamentary procedures and intense public backlash. “There is a need to set the record straight… reputation is anything anybody has got. Things that were said about me have stuck in the minds of Ghanaians,” she stated, stressing that she owed it to herself to clear her name.

Kennedy Agyapong Ditched Me When I Was Carrying His Pregnancy

Safo revealed in an interview on Movement TV on March 19, 2025, that her former partner, Kennedy Agyapong, abandoned her during the 2007 New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries to campaign for Professor Mike Oquaye, despite her being pregnant with his child at the time.

When asked whether she would support Kennedy Agyapong’s bid for the NPP flagbearership, Safo stated that she believes in the party’s current flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, emphasizing that her political decisions are not influenced by family ties. “I have made my political decision, and I believe Dr. Bawumia deserves a second chance. That is my position,” she said, adding, “Do you know that during my first primary, Kennedy Agyapong campaigned for Professor Mike Oquaye instead of supporting me?”

The Controversial E-Levy Vote

Adwoa Safo also defended her decision to abstain from the Electronic Transactions Levy (E-Levy) vote, stating her position was guided by principle and constituent feedback. She believed the tax would exacerbate economic hardship, particularly for vulnerable Ghanaians. “I didn’t vote for the e-levy, and I have no regrets about my decision,” she explained, adding that it would disproportionately impact low-wage earners relying on mobile money (MoMo) to support families in rural areas, “taking away the little they had” and “further deepening their difficulties.”

Safo also highlighted the perceived contradiction between the government’s promises and reality. “We were told that by introducing the e-levy, Ghana could avoid going to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). However, in the end, we still ended up seeking IMF support.” Her refusal to support the bill reportedly strained her relationship with party leadership.

Don’t Blame Dr. Bawumia For NPP’s Loss

Furthermore, Safo criticised attempts to blame the NPP’s performance in the 2024 elections solely on its presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. She argued that deeper factors were at play and called on figures like former Speaker of Parliament Prof. Mike Oquaye to assess the reasons for the NPP’s loss in Dome-Kwabenya, questioning why Prof. Oquaye’s son was unable to retain the parliamentary seat, despite it being an NPP stronghold. She contrasted this with her own 12-year tenure holding the same seat.

NPP’s Dome-Kwabenya Candidate Insulted My Father

Adwoa Safo has accused the NPP parliamentary candidate for Dome-Kwabenya, Mike Oquaye Jnr., of demeaning her father, Apostle Kojo Safo Kantanka, by allegedly telling constituents he was an “uneducated bush farmer” while promoting his own father’s professorship, as mentioned on Movement TV. Oquaye Jnr. has denied these allegations.

Akufo-Addo Backed Corruption In School Feeding Program

Safo also alleged widespread corruption and mismanagement within the School Feeding Programme, implicating former President Akufo-Addo. She stated that Akufo-Addo ordered an audit immediately after her appointment as Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, even before the ministry received funding. However, after uncovering significant irregularities, Safo claimed she faced resistance and that the President distanced himself from the audit.

She accused the former coordinator (Madam Gertrude Essie Quashigah) of obstructing the audit, proposing a scheme to add ghost schools for personal gain, and refusing to provide essential documents. Despite completing the audit and submitting a report, Safo claimed it was shelved after public criticism, marking the start of her “problems.” She has called for a thorough investigation into the School Feeding Programme, particularly in the Central Region where she says many irregularities were uncovered.

2024 Election Review Committee is bogus, Lacks Credibility

Adwoa Safo has dismissed the NPP’s Election Review Committee, led by Prof. Mike Oquaye, as a “bogus” effort designed to unfairly influence the selection of the party’s next presidential candidate. She argues that Prof. Oquaye’s involvement creates a conflict of interest, preventing him from presenting a fair report, especially considering the NPP’s loss in Dome-Kwabenya, a constituency he previously represented.

She challenged him to include a detailed account of why his son lost the Dome-Kwabenya parliamentary seat in the report’s first page, as opposed to focusing on failures by other leaders, she insists that his involvement is an attempt to push “certain candidates away.” The former lawmaker insisted, if he does so with integrity then his review would be fair, otherwise, the party won’t progress.

I Won’t Leave NPP Until Dr. Bawumia Becomes President

Despite this criticism, Safo vowed to remain in the NPP until Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia becomes president. She asserted that Bawumia is a hardworking and deserving candidate, stating, “We are bringing Bawumia back…every person deserves a second chance.”
