8 Travelers Killed In Bawku Conflict-Linked Attack

Eight travelers have lost their lives in a brutal attack on the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Gbimsi, close to Walewale, in northern Ghana. The incident, which has sparked widespread security concerns, is believed to be linked to the ongoing Bawku conflict.
On Sunday, armed men established roadblocks in both Gbimsi and Walewale Town, stopping vehicles to identify and target individuals. Passengers caught in the blockade were subjected to interrogation, with a horrifying outcome: eight people were killed and two vehicles set ablaze.
A survivor described the terrifying experience: “I was traveling from Sunyani to Paga. Upon reaching Walewale, people had mounted roadblocks and were searching for individuals to kill. The incident lasted for over an hour, and security didn’t respond.”
The attack, believed to be related to the recent escalation of the Bawku conflict, has heightened tensions in the region. The conflict, which has plagued the area for decades, has seen a resurgence after a period of relative peace.

In response to the attack, the Ghana Police Service has assured travelers of increased security presence along the highway in the coming days. They have deployed joint police and military patrols to maintain security and manage traffic flow.
The police statement emphasizes their commitment to restoring peace and order in Bawku and its surrounding areas, including the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway.
