68th Independence Day: Schedule for March 6

To celebrate Ghana’s 68th anniversary of independence (Independence Day), the National Celebrations Planning Committee (NCPC) has announced a number of events.

The events will include historical remembrances, educational contests, and a great ceremonial procession with the goal of promoting patriotism and involving individuals, particularly the youth, in the country’s past.

On Friday, February 28, the commemoration of the 28th February Crossroad Shooting Incident kicks off the festivities. This yearly celebration pays tribute to three former soldiers who were shot in 1948 during a crucial phase in Ghana’s struggle for independence while demonstrating for their rights.

The Lineup of Activities Includes:

• Friday, February 28, 2025: Commemoration of the 28th February Crossroad Shooting Incident.
• Sunday, March 02, 2025: Finals of a nationwide school quiz competition.
• Tuesday, March 04, 2025: Finals of a nationwide debate competition.
• Wednesday, March 05, 2025: President’s school children awards programme.
• Thursday, March 06, 2025: Ceremonial parade at the forecourt of the Presidency.

28th February Commemoration Details:

March 6 Independence Day

The Communications Subcommittee of the NCPC will launch an information and educational campaign for television, radio, and social media in advance of the February 28 Wreath Laying Ceremony.

The aim is to reignite interest and participation from the youth and the general public in this significant national event, while remembering and honoring Ghana’s heroes.

To achieve this:

• Historical content on the events leading up to the 28th February 1948 shooting of three ex-service men will be shared.
• The Communications Subcommittee will host an X-space conversation on the ‘Changing face of Civil Protests in Ghana: Lessons from the past and present.’
• Radio, television, online, and print media are encouraged to host and publish conversations promoting the anniversary theme and other activities, with the goal of deepening public participation.
• The wreath laying ceremony will take place at the Nationalism Park at 8 a.m. on February 28, 2025. The event will be broadcast live and streamed on multiple platforms.
• The media, bloggers, and the public are encouraged to actively participate by sharing information with their viewers, listeners, and readers.
