2024 Elections: EC Declares Former President Mahama Winner With Over 56% Votes

Former President and Leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has been officially declared the winner of Ghana’s 2024 presidential election by Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa. The announcement, made on Monday, December 9th, 2024, followed a Saturday election and a delay in result collation due to outstanding results from nine constituencies. While the delay was unusual, it fell within the EC’s 72-hour timeframe.

Mahama secured a landslide victory with 6,328,397 votes (56.55%), significantly outpacing his closest contender, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who received 4,657,304 votes (41.61%). The margin of victory stands at 1,671,093 votes. The EC Chair stated that the inclusion of outstanding results from the nine constituencies (approximately 947,000 votes) would not alter the outcome. The total valid votes cast were 11,191,422, with 239,109 rejected ballots, resulting from a total of 11,430,531 votes cast from a registered electorate of 18,774,159. Voter turnout in the 267 constituencies with completed results was 60.9%.

While the NDC secured a clear parliamentary majority, some parliamentary seats remain outstanding due to ongoing disputes. The initially peaceful election process deteriorated into post-election violence in several areas, allegedly due to attempted rigging and delays in result collation, resulting in three deaths and numerous injuries. The Ghana Police Service reported 89 arrests for election-related offenses.

The NDC urged its supporters to remain peaceful, while the NPP condemned the violence and appealed for swift police action.
